This past May I photographed a lovely Spring wedding in Bristol, RI. The ceremony was held on a Sunday afternoon in the North Garden at Blithewold Mansion, a 33 acre garden-arboretum on Narragansett Bay. As a Rhode Island wedding photographer this has been one of my favorite venues. I could get lost everyday in the sprawling gardens of Blithewold. Annie, the bride got ready in the newly built Bridal Suite. It is a beautiful, thoughtfully designed space, and perfect setting to start your wedding day. Annie wore a whimsical blush-champaign colored ball gown with detachable sleeves, evoking the wings of a fairy princess. Her shoes were an elegant ballet flat made even more feminine in a light and airy lace.
I was excited to take Annie’s bridal portrait under what I think was a Weeping Cherry Tree. Regardless of what it was the tree had the most beautiful pink blossoms that swayed in the breeze. Throughout the grounds Spring was in full bloom. Every corner of the estate was brimming with life.
As the North Garden started to fill up with friends and family who flew in from across the country Annie waited inside for her grand entrance. Tom and his groomsmen arrived, walking single file across the Great Lawn. It was striking to watch. Then as Annie descended the old stone staircase, escorted by her father, Tom’s emotions swept over him. Annie’s father, a minister, resided over the ceremony reading from the book of Ruth. They spoke their vows to one another and prayed together. It was a heartfelt ceremony that I was honored to be a part of.
We walked through the Basquet, a woodland shade garden designed by landscape architect, John DeWolf. Watching them walk hand in hand through the trees was like stepping into a fairytale.
The Display Garden was the perfect location for portraits. It was golden hour when we snuck off from the reception to take a few photos. As we walked Annie and Tom told me how they were happy to explore the grounds as neither of them were from the area and had yet to experience the gardens.
Once we were done with the portraits we returned to the reception. The evening held so many thoughtful details for the guests, a family Bible to sign in lieu of a traditional guestbook, homemade Italian cookies and lawn games to play. Each guest had a gift at their seat, a tiny canisters of coffee beans with a tag that read “Love is Brewing.” Isn’t that adorable?
There was so much love and joy at this wedding that I felt like I was with family. Annie and Tom, I wish you all the best on your life together. May you always love one another and be each other’s best friend.
I had the pleasure of working with some lovely wedding vendors for this wedding.
